Dylann Roof Now On Federal Death Row In Terre Haute

Convicted Charleston, SC, church shooter Dylann Roof is now on federal death row.

Convicted church shooter Dylann Roof was transferred to death row at Terre Haute Federal Prison, a medium-security facility in Indiana which executes inmates by lethal injection.

Prison records obtained by NBC News revealed that Roof, 23, was moved from the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, to Terre Haute on Friday. The move comes 11 days after Roof pleaded guilty to state murder charges related to the 2015 Emanuel AME Church massacre, according to The Post and Courier.

Roof fatally shot nine black parishioners on June 17, 2015, after being invited to Bible study. The self-proclaimed white supremacist told FBI agents that he intended to start a race war.

The 23-year-old was found guilty of 33 federal charges—including hate crimes—in December. Crime Online reported that Roof was sentenced to death in January.

Court proceedings came to a close earlier this month when Roof pleaded guilty to 13 state charges—including nine counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and a weapons charge. In exchange, he was sentenced to life without parole and avoided a second trial, according to The State.

Terra Haute, which houses 1,338 inmates, was also home to Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh, and drug kingpin Raul Garza.

Roof is the 63rd inmate in line for execution on federal death row. The Courier pointed out that the last federal execution was performed in 2003.
